Sunday Evening I attendeded the HDR annual awards dinner. Each year I am unimpressed with the food, but that is not why I attend. I go to show my support for the local running community. Besides, they usually have nice awards and raffle prizes. I have only once before won an award and that was for most improved runner of the year back in 2001. I am not sure I really improved that year, but I ran a whole bunch of races at odd distances (5 mile, 7K, 10 mile, 15K, 20k etc.) and set a whole slew of PRs…
This past year I really did improve, but I was afraid that my meager race performances would not show it. I did not race in 2008 until I ran the summer cross country series. These races were difficult to compare with previous years as it was a new course. I ran a 5K on the 4th of July, on a warm day -it was not a PR. Finally on a cool August morning I ran a 5K at Marina Del Rey which was a new PR at 20:46. Then in November I ran the Palmdale ACES 10K in a new PR time of 44:21 and then topped it off at the Toys for Tots 5K in November with another PR of 20:29.
Well, the HDR apparently noticed as they awarded me the Most Improved Runner award of 2008.
I also kept my streak of winning something in the raffle. I believe that I have won something just about every year I have attended. This year it was a $15 gift certificate to Target. Target may not be too exciting, but I will find something fun to do with it.
