Fast Finish Long Run #3

This afternoon/evening I headed over to Joe Walker to run my Fast Finish Long Run. My reason for going there was that I would have a fairly level 1 mile loop I could run while having access to water and restrooms. Also, on a windy day like today I figured it would be better than the aquaduct!

I ran most of my 20 miles looping around Joe Walker and Lane Park, but I came in and circled the track from miles 9 through around 14, I went out and did a loop came back in for just a bit and then headed back out, doing the last 3 or 4 around the school/park.

I did the first 10 easy: My 10 mile split was 1:26:51 – 8:41 per mile…. Karl happened to show up around mile 6 or 7 and run most of a loop with me. It turned out that he was there to run with the Desert Christian High kids. So, once I moved in to run around the track I had lots of friendly company on the track. Clay, Zack, Kristen…. Besides the DCS group there was a group of former runners who currently run for Paraclete. They yelled high, and how far you going, and such! It was good to see them. You’ll see some of their names in the paper: Saedra Wright and Moriah Gibson – excellent athletes.

Neil met me at 9.5 miles and jumped in to run with me. He had graciously agreed to run the last half of my fast finish run with me tomorrow and had even been willing for a last minute change to today…. Literally, I called him at 3:45 and told him I was starting at 4:00 and he came right over! Thanks Neil!  He got side tracked (with my blessings) and ran with the DCS team for a bit but he was back for the last 4 or 5 with me when it became critical.

Here’s how the last 10 went:

Miles 10-12 (on track) 7:45, 7:36,
Miles 13-16: (around park) 7:46, 7:48, 8:08, 7:56
Mile 17 (on track): 7:21
Miles 18-20 (around park): 7:56, 7:01, 7:01 FAST FINISH courtesy of Neil cajoling me and letting me draft him into the headwind. The only problem is that he kept surging and I’d lose a few steps (and all drafting effect) and I’d really have to bear down to get back with him. Then he’d see me there and surge again!!!

Total time was 2:43:17

Last 10 split 1:16:35 for a 7:38 average pace!
Success! 7:38 would get me a 3:20 Marathon!

Thanks Neil!!
