HDR XC Race #2

I didn’t really race this week. I held back for the upcoming Santa Clarita Independence day 5K on Saturday.  I ran the 1 mile in 9:07 (I think) and spent the latter part encouraging a couple of my newer runners to a strong finish. I also ran along with a lady named Suzanne. It used to be Suzanne Beech but I am sure it is something else now. She used to play 3rd base on a softball team I managed for several years in the late 80s. I am not sure she recognized/remembered me….

I lined up for the 3, near the back of the pack and happened to be next to George – one of the Tuesday night HDR runners. I asked him what he did last week and he said 28:30something. I asked him if he was going to try to beat it and he didn’t seem too  convinced… I did notice that, in the beginning George ran out ahead of me. I ran with Johnny Johnstone for awhile. Then I saw and ran with Andy Helme just a bit. On the 1.5 to 2 mile back stretch I noticed George out ahead of me and that he had a good pace set up to break 28 if he did not slow down. So I surged just a little and caught him right after the bridge. I ran along and said, “Here we go George. I’ll break the wind for you!” George ran with me the rest of the way. I paced him through the first part of the last loop and up and over the hills. Then I let him race it in. He finished around 26:38. Good job George!

As for my kids. My top 12 yr old girl Cindy won the 12 and under division and my #2 boy won as well. (The #1 boy was not there.) The #2 boy, Alex had a time of 22:53 – better than my time from last week!

Our Vanessa Lopez won all females in a new course record time. 21 something…. She is going to be awesome. She will be giving Cayley Choate and Jessica Smith some competition for #1 Highland runner next year. Highland’s girls will be strong with the 3 of them and Brenna Hess, Rachel Cortina, Annie Radigan (new this year) and whoever else they have. These girls (except Vanessa – all ran for me at Hillview.)

  1. Good luck on your 5K PR attempt in Santa Clarita. Looking forward to hearing all about it. You are doing a great job coaching the kids. I really enjoy following their progress on your blog.

I am running the 10K and my mother is doing the 5K in the La Palma Fun Run on July 4th. We do this race every year. It runs right by her brother’s house. We always go out to breakfast with him after the race.
