A word of advice…..

I have had an unusual problem this week – post marathon. I finally figured it out. So I am here to caution you lest you make the same mistake……

First the symptom- I am usually a very good sleeper. I go to sleep fairly quickly upon turning out the light and I remember few interruptions in the morning. All week, long I have found myself awake in the middle of the night and it takes me awhile to get back to sleep.  I have been off work, so I can sleep in late. I have needed that extra morning sleep to make up for the interruption in the middle of the night.

Last night, I found myself awake again and I noted the time. It was almost 2 o’clock……

This evening I am preparing to get up and go to church in the morning. I scrolled through the 3 alarms built into my Timex Ironman Triathlon watch. You see, I set one of these alarms each night and it wakes me up in the morning. Usually, that is. Sometimes I can sleep through it. I think, when I do, I incorporate the beeping and the pushing of the button, right there on my arm, into a dream. Just to be sure, I also set my phone alarm for 10 minutes after the Timex. The phone sits across the room. The phone is very loud. I do not want the phone to go off and startle my wife, so I am almost always sure to get up and turn it off.

Anyway, tonight I am scrolling through the alarms to set one for tomorrow and I noticed something odd.  The one I set one week ago tonight, the night before the marathon, the one set for 1:45 a.m. It was still set!!!!  It has been going off every night at 1:45 and it has been waking me up without me realizing that it has woken me up!!

So, a word of advice…… If you set an alarm to go off in the middle of the night to get up and go off on a crazy marathon running adventure…. make sure you reset that same alarm before you go to sleep the next night!!!
