Yesterday, we had our 3rd middle school cross country meet. Desert Christian School was the host. It was held at Marie Kerr Park. The interesting thing about this race is that it was the first race of the season where the runners would be separated by grade level. We ran the 8th grade boys and girls together, then the 7th grade boys and girls, and finally the 6th grade and younger boys and girls. The boys and girls ran together, but the results were tabulated separately.
As expected the 8th grade boys started the afternoon dominating their race. Last week a boy from Joe Walker broke up the perfect score, so they were going to have none of that today. The further challenge for them was to beat the Mariah Castillo, Joe Walker’s top girl. Last year Mariah beat all the boys head to head. She also won at Mt Sac and is breaking all of our course records. She will be fun to watch in high school. So Leo, Cade, Bryce and Cole were all successful at finishing ahead of Mariah. Michael Vigil got in just ahead of Joe Walker’s top boy. They earned their perfect score.
The 8th grade girls fell once again to Mariah and the Joe Walker girls. Mariah was followed by 3 team mates before Hillview’s top girl finished. The scoring was really simple: Joe Walker in 1, 2, 3, and 4, Hillview in 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 (with 10 and 11pushers), Tropico in 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. Joe Walkers last girl was 17th but they still won. In order to beat them a couple of our girls need to get ahead of some of their group AND we need another team or two to show up with a FULL team of runners!
The 7th grade boys were almost as dominant as the boys. Adam Deshields reestablished his place as team and league leader. Hillview’s Derek Rodriguez was not too far behind in second place. A runner from Amargosa Creek came in and then it was Hillview, Hillview, Hillview!
The 7th grade girls won a close contest over Joe Walker. Amargosa Creeks, Janiah Brown ran away with the win. Then Natalie Gutierrez came in second. Hillview and Joe Walker runners traded places after that: Hillview, Joe Walker, Hillview, Joe Walker, Hillview, Hillview, Joe Walker, Joe Walker, Hillview!
The 6th grade boys race was won by Hillview runner Brady Butler. The rest of the team was just good enough to provide the support for the win!. The 6th grade girls race was won by Valley View elementary. Hillview came in a close second – even though we only have 5 runners!
