Hawaii – PART 5 – Oahu weekend

The cruise ended on Saturday the 18th back in Honolulu on the Island of Oahu. We got off the ship and took a cab to rent a car at the airport. We drove over to Diamond Head to go for a hike but the parking lot was full and so were all the parking areas within quite a distance. So we went on to the next item on my list: The Lyon Arboretum. This garden was not as nice as the one in Hilo. But on their grounds there was a trail that lead to a nice little waterfall.

Here is a video I made of a bird chirping in a tree:

After this we went to downtown Honolulu and toured Iolani Palace.

Sunday, I got up early and drove to Kualoa Ranch. This is on the east side of the Island. I believe it was only about 25 miles away but it took 45 minutes or so to get there. Speed limits are all very slow in Hawaii. Most of the highway goint to Kualoa Ranch was set at 35 mph! I found the parking lot for Xterra’s Run Star Trail Race!

20160619_064447 It was cloudy before the race began and not too uncomfortable. However as the race got underway it proved to be quite a challenge. The sun came out. The temperature was in the mid 80s. The humidity was much higher that what I am used to. Some of the “trail” looked like it had not been a trail days earlier.
20160619_074238 There was a lot of passing required due to the fact that there were 4 different simultaneous races going on. Some sections were muddy and treacherously slippery…..

I signed up for the 30K but I felt completely exhausted around 10 or 11 miles. My right adductor felt on the urge of cramping up. I decided I’d drop down to the 20K and call it a day. When I was finished I had to find a seat and just sit for awhile. I felt like this was a before and after photo:

The 12.5 mile run took my 2:02:47.  Not too exciting average pace, but it was fast enough to win my age division!

That evening we went to the Diamond Head Luau. I got a good deal on Groupon. I upgraded the seats. I ended up too close to the stage, however. When the performers came off the stage to grab a few “volunteers” I got chosen…..
